TV Shows I Just Couldn't Get Into

I'm a pop culture junkie. I love all things trendy in TV and movies and gosh darn it, if something is really trending and everyone is talking about it on Twitter, I want in on the action.

But sometimes, try as I might, I just cannot get into some of these shows that you all are raving about. So in no particular order, here's my list for both current and past shows. Please let me know what's on YOUR "I just don't love it" list, and also if I should give any of these another try before I throw in the towel for good.

 - Breaking Bad

What turned me off from this show was how dark it was. And yes, I did know before I watched the first season that it was about meth, so I assumed it wasn't going to be Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston skipping through a field of daises, holding hands. I'm not a prude when it comes to violence but for me, I just couldn't "live" in that head space with those characters, for so many seasons. I saw the first season and then was like, yep I'm good. I can stop here.

That all to say - I think Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston are WONDERFUL actors but I knew this wasn't a show where I could go the distance.

(Although, I did watch / fast forward through most of the series finale, just so I knew how it all turned out, so maybe I kinda sorta liked it.)

 - Game of Thrones

One of the first things I turned to when I signed up for HBO Now was Game of Thrones. I'd heard so much hysteria about it, I just had to check it out for myself.

I watched most of Season 1, and my general reaction was - meh.

I mean, I didn't hate it or anything; I thought it was fine, but just couldn't get why people were obsessed.

GOT fans -- when did you love it? Right away? Second season?

 - The Walking Dead

Full disclosure: I hate gore on screen. Suspenseful? I can do that all day long. Mysteries? Bring it on. But a show all about zombies? And gore, blood, guts? No ma'am; I'm OUT.

I also wonder (and perhaps WD devotees can clue me in here) how the heck they make a multiple season show out of the premise of a zombie apocalypse. I mean, can you REALLY carve out a good narrative that basically involves them killing zombies every episode?

 - Veep

It's got such crazy-good reviews that I checked it out a few weeks ago. I only got about four episodes in and thought, OK maybe they just got off to a shaky start.  That happens. I tried, I soldiered ahead to Episodes 5 and 6....but decided that those were hours of my life I can't get back and so I had to put Veep on the discard pile.

That all being said, I think Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is wonderful, as is the whole cast individually. I just didn't think it was at all funny or amusing; the story lines seemed forced and the laughs were predictable and frankly, not that funny.

 - Friday Night Lights

Look, I know I might lose some of you because of this entry. I am well aware that people LOVED this show like I loved Gilmore Girls. I get it.

But confession - - I have watched the first 5 episodes MULTIPLE TIMES over the last 2-3 years, hoping that this is the time it'll catch me and I'll "get" FNL, but that has yet to happen.

Those of you who love it - - please tell me when it gets better. Is it a slow starter? Did you feel the same and then hit, say, Episode 10 and went Oh OK, NOW it's good?!

I asked the fine folks in my Facebook group what shows were on their lists, and here are some of their comments:

So please share on Facebook, Twitter and right here in the comments - what shows are on your "meh" list?
